Emacs ansi-term: eterm-color not found

So I had been playing around with a couple of MacPorts recently, and suddenly ansi-term was no longer happy with me trying to run mutt...it simply spit out the error eterm-color not found, and sent me packing back to a standard terminal. No good.

A quick search turned up this post describing the problem, and (not surprisingly) the ansi-term hints on emacswiki.org, which mentions the eterm-color terminfo files in question.

The solution turned out to be utilizing the tic command (which I had never heard of) to install the eterm-color terminfo file as follows:

tic -o ~/.terminfo /usr/share/emacs/22.1/etc/e/eterm-color.ti

i <3 lulu.com

For those of you that have never heard of Lulu.com...now you have...and here's why I'm plugging them for free: I discovered that I could (and did) get Paul Graham's On Lisp for a paltry $13.02. Don't ask what the extra 2 cents is for...you shouldn't care. Why? Because $13.02 is a lot better than, say, $98.99. Nice.

Emacs Tip: Highlighting between parenthesis

I finally found the setting to highlight all content between parenthesis (as opposed to just highlighting the matching parenthesis themselves). Turns out the ParenSetMode page on the Emacs wiki is a bit out of date, and the option lies in the show-paren-style variable:

(show-paren-mode t)
(setq show-paren-style 'expression)

Command Line: Encrypted DMG's

I came accross this post on macosxhints.com which made me wonder how to create encrypted DMGs from the command line. Turns out it's a no-brainer.

hdiutil create -fs HFS+ -encryption -stdinpass \
-srcfolder SomeFolder -volname VolumeName Encrypted.dmg

The -stdinpass option prompts you for a password for the DMG, reading from standard input (using readpassphrase in a terminal).

Nice.

UK Gun Ban: Lessons Learned

I stumbled across this video early this morning and found it particularly sobering. This is what happens when sheep forfeit their rights.

I would strongly recommend watching the entire 9 minutes, but if you're too busy, at least fast-forward to 8:05 and listen to the last minute.

Then go read a book.
